Migration Is Sacred— Archival Ink on Mulberry paper- 31 inches tall- this design was to celebrate the incredible migrations of grey whales, and the sorrow of the loss of them along our coastline- in 2026 there have been massive die offs due to bottom trawling leading to food system collapse, plastic pollution, and logging destroying salmon runs. This loss and grief of such a wonderful being led me to ask, what if we could renew our relationship with the whale, I had a dream of swimming among them and trying to rescue one, where our skin was covered in barnacles and kelp.
Gray whales make one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal, traveling about 10,000 miles round-trip and in some cases upwards of 14,000 miles. On their migration routes they face threats from vessel strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and other sources of disturbance.
As the ocean knows no borders, neither shall we.
